ABSTRACT
Purpose: To analyze the consequences of using transportability instead of the fraction of the nuclide fr that enters the blood at a relatively higher rate in the early phase of pulmonary clearance. To demonstrate potential ways to improve the quality of nuclide metabolism models built on the basis of ICRP 66.
Material and methods: In the biophysical laboratory of the Southern Urals Research and Clinical Center for Medical Biophysics, the solubility of industrial plutonium compounds from the process areas of the MAYAK Production Association was determined by dialysis in physiological Ringer’s solution and characterized by the transportability, which is a quantitative criterion for classifying industrial aerosols. Within the framework of transportability theory, the observed two-stage dialysis kinetics is explained by the fact that the solid phase of the aerosol is represented by two fractions: fast (transportable) and slow. The transportable fraction leaves the solid phase relatively quickly and moves into solution, being predisposed to do so. The ICRP-66 respiratory tract model proposes three solubility classes of inhalable aerosol: F, M, and S, and establishes absorption parameters from the respiratory system into the blood for these classes. In the models of the Southern Urals Research and Clinical Center for Medical Biophysics (up to and including MWDS-2013), the fraction of the nuclide fr that enters the blood at a relatively higher rate in the early phase of pulmonary clearance after deposition in the respiratory tract is equated to the transportability, expressed as a fraction.
Results: The article shows that the theoretical percentage difference between fr and S relative to fr does not exceed 4.36% for plutonium dioxide and mixed composition, and less than 1% for plutonium nitrate. However, due to the use of rounded S values in the calculations, the percentage difference can range from ‒24% to 18%.
Conclusion: The acceptability of using transportability instead of the nuclide fraction fr from ICRP 66 is demonstrated. A way to improve the quality of nuclide metabolism models is proposed.
